Phablet Matchup of the Day! Asus Fonepad vs. Huawei Ascend Mate

The past few days, two huge Android devices had their share of the spotlight as Asus and Huawei both announced the availability in the country of two of their own droids: the Asus Fonepad and the Huawei Ascend Mate.

The Asus Fonepad, launched last month here in the Philippines, is a 7inch phablet, although with its size it would more likely be used as a tablet than a smartphone by most users. Armed with a 1280×800 HD IPS display panel, a 1GHz single-core Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM, it is aimed to battle the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and Kindle Fire HD in terms of performance and affordability. To keep the overall price down, Asus skimped on the imaging capabilities of the Fonepad as the phablet only sports 3MP rear camera (minus a flash unit) and a 1.2MP front-facing camera. A 4270mAh battery powers the Fonepad.

On the other hand, the Huawei Ascend Mate is more of a phone than a tablet compared to the Asus Fonepad. Also called My Pocket Cinema by the company’s marketing folks, the phablet sports a 6.1inch HD IPS display with a 1280×720 resolution. The device packs a pretty impressive processing power with its 1.5GHz K3V2 quad-core chip and 2GB of RAM. For taking pictures and videos, you get an 8MP rear camera and a 1.2MP front-facing camera. Battery of the Ascend Mate is rated at 4050mAh.

SRP of the Asus Fonepad is P11,995 for the 8GB variant and P14,995 for the 32GB variant. Meanwhile, the Huawei Ascend Mate, available for pre-order since yesterday, is pegged at P16,990. Both devices run Android Jelly Bean out of the box.
