Life is very much unpredictable. Most of the time, we are faced with challenges whenever we least expect them. As such, it pays a lot to be always prepared to face anything life throws against us. Surely, there have been a number of instances wherein we were faced with adversity or emergency and we did not have a clue on how to handle situation.
To remedy this, the American Red Cross has developed a slew of Tools and Resources packaged inside their Disaster and Safety Library to help you in preparing your home, school and workplace in the event of a disaster or emergency. Here, we highlight the six free mobile apps they are promoting and how they could be of great help in preparing us for the days ahead. Although some are only applicable for the United States and its territories, these should still be helpful for you and your loved ones here and abroad.
First Aid App
The First Aid app provides a wealth of expert advice for everyday emergencies right at the palm of your hand. It offers videos, quizzes and guides that will surely educate you on how to do first aid in no time. The app is available for download in both iOS and Android devices.
The Philippines, being part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is surely an easy target of earthquakes. To better prepare, the Earthquake app notifies you when an earthquake occurs, thus letting you prepare your family and home.
Shelter Finder App
The Shelter Finder app, which works only in the US and its territories, displays open Red Cross shelters and their current population on a map interface to help you easily figure out the best shelter to go to. Current populations are typically updated every noon and midnight when shelters are open and providing assistance. Shelter information is updated from the NSS every 30 minutes.
Also usable only for US residents, the Wildfire app gives you the latest news and updates regarding wildfires all over the country, giving you the heads up in preparing your family and loved ones for anything. From your mobile phone, call **REDCROSS (**73327677) and we will send you a link to download the iPhone / Android app or visit iTunes or Google Play app stores.
Complementing the Tornado app is the Hurricane app, which lets you monitor conditions in your area or throughout the storm track, prepare your family and home, find help and let others know you are safe even if the power is out.
