Russia Gives Asylum To Snowden

Edward Snowden, the PRISM whistleblower, has just been granted asylum for one year by the Russian government. Snowden, who has been in Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport since June 23, left last Thursday with WikiLeak’s legal adviser Sarah Harrison to an undisclosed location.

After requesting for asylum in 21 countries, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia were the only countries aside from Russia that expressed interest in accepting Snowden. However, the US has extended tremendous pressure and muscle to make the said countries deny him refuge.

Amidst all these developments, US President Barack Obama is still slated to visit Moscow before the G20 Summit in St. Petersburg next month. However, the question is, how much pressure the said move will give to the already shaky US-Russia relations.
